Friday, June 4, 2021, Becca's oldest child and only daughter, Abigail, married Evan Woodfin. Everything about it was beautiful, including the mother of the bride. Escorted by her two oldest sons, Noah and Isaac, Becca looked gorgeous as she walked down the aisle. Abigail was exquisite. For those of us in the audience, it was a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. I don't know for sure, but I bet "relaxed" is not the word Becca would use to describe every aspect of the shindig, but for those of us in attendance, it was a fun evening.
I almost was not one of those enjoying the occasion of this union. I had a lot of trepidation about going. I told Laura and Lucinda Clark (Baptist Prep's amazing Spanish teacher who absolutely LOVES our kids and directed the wedding), but I had not said anything to Becca. Finally, on Thursday (I think it was?), I texted Becca. It went something like this:
"Becca, I want to explain why you may not see me tomorrow night. I won't lie. This is a tough time. Holiday weekend. Father's Day. Anniversary of Dave's and my engagement. Fourth of July which was always a big deal with his family and our epic fireworks. Dave's birthday. Just a whole lot of special times close together. While I want to celebrate this happy time with my friend, going to a wedding just may be too much. I hope you understand if I don't make it."
To which Becca so graciously replied, "Hey, I absolutely understand and thought that might be the case. You don't worry about it one second."
I certainly do love that girl.
Well, I did think about it. A lot. Laura asked me on Friday afternoon if I had made up my mind. She said Jim wasn't going and I could sit with her. I told her I was getting my hair cut and would let her know. I got home and realized that God has helped me face so much. Why would I doubt Him now? So, I texted Laura that I was getting ready. I got in my car at 5:15 and started to the wedding. I didn't feel anxious. I didn't feel sad. I felt, well, for lack of a better word, triumphant. I knew that it would be a great evening.
After the ceremony, we transformed the same space for the reception. In true Da Mom fashion, Lisa, LJ, Laura, and I were helping the caterer put food out. I saw Becca. I walked up to her and put my hand on her shoulder. She turned around. "You came!" she exclaimed and gave me the biggest hug.
I'm so glad I did.
